The winery is located in the municipality of Herxheim am Berg (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of
Pfalz. The ancestors of the family on the mother's side came here from Tyrol as wood coopers in 1655 after the end of the 30-year war. Today, Gerd and Sigrun Petri are the 12th generation to run the business. Their two sons Maximilian (California) and Philipp (Australia) completed an internship overseas. The vineyards cover 15 hectares in the
Himmelreich and Honigsack (Herxheim) and
Saumagen (Kallstadt) vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (40%), Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer and Scheurebe, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Cabernet Cubin, Merlot and Frühburgunder.
The vineyards are cultivated according to the guidelines of controlled environmentally friendly viticulture.
Insecticides and
herbicides are not used.
Fertilisation is only carried out to the extent of nutrient removal by the vines, so that there is no contamination of the groundwater. This results in quality-enhancing, low yields, which are harvested by late and selective hand-picking. Gentle pressing is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation and long ageing on the
fine lees, preferably in wooden barrels. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and, in years with suitable weather conditions,
ice wines are also produced
