The winery is located amidst hillside vineyards in the municipality of St.Magdalena near Bolzano in the Italian wine-growing region of South Tyrol ( Trentino-South Tyrol region). The "Obermosergütl" was taken over by the Rottensteiner family in 1890 and is now in its fifth generation as an established small producer-bottler. In addition to the vineyards around the winery, which was restructured in 2009, the Vigna Grafenleiten in St. Magdalena and the vineyard "Berg" in Obermagdalena are also cultivated. Above Lake Caldaro, the family also owns a vineyard in the Putz Mauer site. The winery has been run by winemaker Thomas Rottensteiner since 2012.
The vineyards cover four hectares of vineyards, some of which are extremely steep. They are predominantly planted with varieties of the two autochthonous grape varieties Vernatsch = Schiava (50%) and Lagrein (40%) in the classic pergola style. The white grape variety Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated in the Guyot system. The gentle and natural cultivation together with intensive manual work in the vineyards makes it possible to do without herbicides and avoid treatments.
The red wines are matured in traditional small and large wooden bar rels, the Riserva in tonneau and barrique barrels, the white wine in stainless steel tanks as DOC Südtiroler. Together with other winegrowers in the zone, a lot of passion is invested in the site wine St. Magdalener Classico. The flagship is the Lagrein Riserva "Grafenleiten" (14 months barrel ageing). Around 32,000 bottles of wine are marketed annually. The winery is a founding member of the winegrowers' association Freie Weinbauern Südtirol.
