The Max Schell winery is located in the municipality of Rech in the German wine-growing region of Ahr. Today, the tradition-oriented family winery is run in the third generation by the grandson of the founder, Wolfgang Schulze-Icking and his wife Katarina. The prospective fourth generation, daughter Annika, is completing her bachelor's degree in viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim after completing her apprenticeship as a winemaker. Holiday flats are also available for rent. In the heated barrel cellar, events for 10 to 30 people are organised with wine tastings and gastronomic offerings. Wines, sparkling wines and spirits can be tasted daily in the newly designed vinotheque.
The vineyards cover three hectares in the single vineyard sites Rosenthal and Silberberg (Ahrweiler), Pfaffenberg (Walporzheim), Burggarten, (Dernau), Herrenberg (Rech), as well as Mönchberg (Mayschoß). They are planted with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir ( 70% of the total area), Frühburgunder and Blauer Portugieser, as well as the white wine varieties Riesling and Chardonnay. The philosophy of the winery is to cultivate according to the guidelines of biodynamic viticulture (which is currently being converted to) with quality-oriented grape production. The house speciality is Ahr-Burgundy wines.
Most of the white wines are fermented under refrigeration and matured in stainless steel. Some of the wines are even matured for up to nine months in barrique bar rels before being bottled. The red wines are traditionally matured for up to two years in oak barrels of between 228 litres (barrique) and 1,000 litres after manual harvesting and mash fermentation. The extensive range of products also includes rosé wines, Blanc de noirs, bottle-fermented sparkling wines, mulled wines, spirits(brandy, pomace brandy, liqueur), grape juice, jams and wine jelly.
