The winery is located in the municipality of Brauneberg (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine region. The winegrowing tradition of the Conrad family goes back over 14 generations to the year 1558. Martin Conrad, whose grandfather was once one of the founders of the Bernkasteler Ring, has been responsible for the cultivation and development of the wines since 1998. The vineyards comprise about 5.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr (Brauneberg), Sonnenlay (Mülheim), as well as Kirchberg (Veldenz). They are 95% planted with Riesling, the remaining area withPinot Blanc.
Martin Conrad is very attached to nature and the environment. From the very beginning, he has been committed to an ecologically sensible and sustainable balance between viticulture and environmental protection when cultivating the vineyards. This philosophy is also implemented in the cellar with the renunciation of the addition of pure yeasts, enzymes and fining agents in order to emphasize the natural complexity of the wines. The winery has thus been practising sustainable, environmentally friendly viticulture in accordance with the EU eco-regulation for years. As a logical consequence, in August 2019, the winery registered with the GfRS organic inspection body for organic certification. From the 2022 vintage onwards, all wines carry the organic certificate on their labels.
The yields are reduced to less than 50% of the legally permitted maximum quantity. The grape harvest is done selectively by hand. The fermentation is spontaneous with yeasts from the vines to bring out the individual terroir character more finely. The wines have been 100% vegan since 1998. The product range is divided into the lines estate wines (wines typical of the grape variety without indication of the vineyard location), site wines (basis of the terroir-emphasized collection), site wines GOLDKAPSEL (particularly expressive site wines with a clearly reduced yield of max. 55 hl/ha) and the great plants (dry top wines from the best vineyards of the top sites with a yield of max. 40 hl/ha), which are only vinified in very good years.
The winery offers so-called vine sponsorships, which are valid for two vines each. The vines are labelled with the names of the vine sponsors and the sponsorship is documented with a certificate. The sponsors receive two bottles of sponsored wine each year with their own name on the bottle label. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced, most of which have been aged on yeast for more than 36 months, and noble brandies. The winery is a founding member of the Bernkasteler Ring.
