The winery is located in the municipality of Brauneberg (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region. The winegrowing tradition of the Conrad family goes back over 14 generations to the year 1558. Martin Conrad, whose grandfather was once one of the founders of the Bernkasteler Ring, has been responsible for the business since 1998.
The vineyards cover around 5.5 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr (Brauneberg), Sonnenlay (Mülheim) and Kirchberg (Veldenz). They are 95% planted with Riesling, the remaining area with Pinot Blanc. The vineyards are cultivated according to environmentally friendly ecological criteria. Yields are reduced to less than 50% of the legally permitted maximum quantity. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand.
In accordance with the EU Organic Wine Regulation, we have been practising sustainable, environmentally friendly viticulture for years and registered for organic certification with the GfRS inspection body (Gesellschaft für Ressourcenschutz: control no. GfRS DE-ÖKO-039) in August 2019. Since the 2022 vintage, all wines have carried the organic certificate on the bottle label. The wines have been 100% vegan since the 1998 vintage.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeasts in order to bring out the individual terroir character more finely. The addition of pure yeasts, enzymes and fining agents is generally avoided in order to emphasise the natural complexity of the wines. The product range is divided into the lines Gutsweine (wines typical of the grape variety), single vineyards (basis of the terroir-emphasised collection), single vineyards GOLDKAPSEL (expressive single vineyards with a reduced yield of max. 55 hl/ha) and the Grosse Gewächse (dry top wines from the best vineyards in the top locations with a maximum yield of 40 hl/ha), which are only vinified in very good years. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, usually aged on the lees for more than 36 months, and fine brandies are also produced.
The winery offers so-called vine sponsorships, which are valid for two vines each. The vines are labelled with sponsor signs and the sponsorship is documented with a certificate. The sponsors receive two bottles of sponsored wine a year with their own name on the bottle label.
