The winery is located in the municipality of Münster-Sarmsheim in the German wine-growing region of
Nahe. It was founded as early as 1790. The family has lived in the estate building since 1830. After studying agricultural sciences, internships at Californian wineries and research work at the
Geisenheim Research Institute, Stefan Rumpf took over the winery from his parents in 1984. Until then, some of the wines were sold to very renowned other wineries, but still almost exclusively in barrels. Stefan Rumpf switched to bottled wine sales and self-marketing. Since 1994, his wife Cornelia has been running the estate tavern as a country inn. Natural viticulture is practised. Special attention is paid to grapes harvested in several courses by means of manual harvesting with optimal ripeness
The vineyards cover 20 hectares with vines up to 40 years old in the
Dautenpflänzer,
Kapellenberg,
Pittersberg and
Rheinberg (Münster), as well as
Burgberg and
Goldloch (Dorsheim) sites. They are 70% planted with Riesling (15 ha), as well as Pinot Blanc, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder and Pinot Noir. Pearl wine and bottle-fermented sparkling wine are also produced. There is further property in the municipality of
Bingen-Büdesheim in the
Rheinhessen wine-growing region, where Riesling is grown in the famous
Scharlachberg. The winery has been a member of the
VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) since 1992
