City on the Rhine in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate with about 25,000 inhabitants at the mouth of the Nahe river into the Rhine at the foot of the Rochusberg. Even before the Romans, there was a Celtic settlement called Bingium here because of its convenient location. Already the Romans were cultivating wine here at the turn of the century. The river Nahe forms a natural border between two growing areas. The district Bingen-Bingerbrück is located to the left of the mouth of the Nahe and belongs to the Nahe wine growing area. Often used but not unique short name for the two red grape varieties Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although they are closely related (the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon are Cabernet Franc x Sauvignon Blanc), it is not always clear which one is meant. Especially in Northern Italy, it is not clear for some DOC wines which variety or composition is included. As a rule, Cabernet Sauvignon is more likely to be meant, especially because it is simply more common. But Cabernet is confusingly also a synonym for the grape varieties Béquignol Noir and Carmenère.

The red grape variety (also Geilweilerhof 67-198-3, GF. 67-198-3) is an interspecific new variety between Diana (1) x Chambourcin. It contains genes from Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The crossing of the hybrids was done in 1967 by Dr. Gerhardt Alleweldt (1927-2005) at the Institute Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen/Pfalz.
