The winery is located in the community of Hattenheim (part of Eltville) in the German Rheingau wine region. It was founded in 1953 by Johann Josef Lang. In 2013 the estate was acquired by the Swiss Urban Kaufmann (former owner of an Appenzeller cheese dairy) and Eva Raps (former GF of the VDP). Kaufmann is the responsible oenologist and is supported by Eckart Waitz. Eva Raps is responsible for marketing and sales. The vineyards comprise 20 hectares of vineyards in the individual sites Hassel and Wisselbrunnen (Hattenheim), classified as Grosse Lage (VDP), and in the first site (VDP) Schützenhaus (Hattenheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (80%),Pinot Blanc, PinotGris, Chardonnay and Silvaner, as well asPinot Noir. In 2009 the complete conversion to organic viticulture took place, so that all wines from the 2012 vintage onwards are certified according to organic guidelines.
After the presentation of the first three wines of the 2014 vintage, a complete wine line called "Kaufmann" was started with the 2015 vintage. Both the Rieslings and the white Burgundy varieties as well as the Pinot Noir will be marketed with the new equipment in the future. The clear and precise character of the controlled organic wines is intended to reflect their Rheingau origins and bring the winery back to the top quality of the VDP Rheingau. The striking red equipment refers to Urban Kaufmann's Swiss origin, as does the name of the branded wine "Tell", a high-quality Riesling cuvée from the estate's best sites. The annual production of wine and sparkling wine comprises around 140,000 bottles of wine. The winery is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
