The winery is located in the municipality of Thörnich (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine region. A Straußwirtschaft is attached. The family business is managed by Karl-Jürgen and Cornelia Thul. The vineyards comprise nine hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Ritsch (Thörnich), Bruderschaft (Klüsserath) and Maximiner Klosterlay (Detzem). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (two thirds of the area with vines, some of which are rootless, over 70 years old),Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau, as well as the red wine varietiesPinot Noir, Regent and Dornfelder.
Special attention is paid to the care of the vineyard and is carried out in a natural, environmentally friendly manner. This includes pruning in spring, extensive leaf and soil care during the entire vegetation cycle, greening of the vine lanes and plant protection measures reduced to the minimum necessary. Through late, selective manual harvesting, only ripe and healthy grapes are processed.
The cellar work is carried out as gently as possible by using the force of gravity. Depending on quality and origin, the wines are produced in three categories: base wines, estate wines "Schieferklang" from stony soils and site wines from the best plots. Depending on the type of wine, they are aged in steel tanks, large wooden barrels or in barriques. Sparkling wines, bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies are also produced.
