The winery is located in the municipality of Iphofen (Steigerwald area) in the German wine-growing region of
Franconia. It was founded in 1839 by Johann Balthasar Ruck. After completing his viticulture studies in
Geisenheim, son Johannes took over responsibility in the cellar in 2000 and has been running the business since 2009. Father Johann takes care of the vineyards. These cover 13 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyards
Julius-Echter-Berg,
Kalb and
Kronsberg (Iphofen), as well as
Küchenmeister and
Schwanleite (Rödelsee). They are planted with the white wine varieties Silvaner (39%), Riesling (15%) Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Pinot Gris, Scheurebe, Pinot Blanc, Rieslaner and Traminer, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir and Domina. Traditional, environmentally friendly methods are used in the vineyard and cellar. The specially selected seedlings are cultivated at a high density of up to 7,000 vines per hectare. Through appropriate measures, a quality-enhancing reduction with an average of 55 hl/ha is achieved
The aim is to produce wines that are typical of the vineyard and the variety and are mainly vinified dry. Fermentation often takes place
spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeasts. Depending on the wine type, they are matured in steel tanks or in large wooden barrels. The white wines are aged for a long time on the
fine lees. The premium wines include the
Grosses Gew ächse Sylvaner and Riesling from the Julius-Echter-Berg, the Sylvaner "Myophorium" and "Estheria" made from Scheurebe. A
mass wine in a
Bocksbeutel, bottle-fermented sparkling wine and noble brandies (marc, herbs, wine) are also produced. In years with suitable weather conditions,
Trockenbeerenauslese and
ice wines are also pressed. The winery is a member of the
VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and one of the Franconian
TRIAS wineries
