The winery is located in the municipality of Escherndorf (Maindreieck area) in the German wine-growing region of
Franconia. It was founded in 1977 by Horst Sauer. The vineyards cover 17.5 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Berg,
Fürstenberg and
Lump (Escherndorf), as well as Sonnenberg (Untereisenheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Bacchus, Pinot Blanc and Scheurebe, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir and Domina. The grapes, the must and the wine are moved in the newly built four-storey building over the shortest possible distances almost exclusively by gravity. This gentle treatment, combined with a long, controlled fermentation, produces particularly fine, pure wines. A speciality of the house is the entire range of Prädikat wines from Auslese to Eiswein. The best wines are marketed as
Grosses Gewächs. Depending on the situation, "specials" such as the dry white wine "Sehnsucht" (Silvaner) are pressed on a case-by-case basis. According to the winery's own definition, these are special wines that are individually shaped by the extraordinary inspiration of a moment. Around 150,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the
VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and the
Frank & Frei Winegrowers' Association
