Wine Review Report:

wein.plus rating: excellent (91 WP) What our ratings mean
Last reviewed: 13 February, 2020
Editor note: Cool nose, delicate vegetal notes, citrus and light stone fruit aromas, mineral traces. Clear, light, sweet fruit on the palate, still slightly muted and yeasty, vegetal notes, noticeable earthy and mineral notes in the background, fairly concentrated and persistent, some depth, floral and nutty traces, still rather unapproachable, more earthy and mineral notes on a very good, firm, juicy, slightly spicy finish. Needs time to mature.

Area (also Middle Moselle) of the German Moselle growing region (see in detail there). The eponymous municipality of Bernkastel-Kues with a population of around 8,000 is located on the Middle Moselle in the district of Bernkastel-Wittrich, about 50 kilometres from Trier in the federal state of Rheinald-Pfalz. It is divided into the four districts Andel and Bernkastel on the right and Kues and Wehlen on the left bank of the Moselle. Bernkastel-Kues is a state-approved spa. The individual sites Alte Badstube am Doctorberg, Bratenhöfchen, Doctor, Graben,...

The production area is located in Rhineland-Palatinate and to a small extent in Saarland in Germany. The river Moselle meanders over 237 km on its way from Trier to Koblenz, but the linear distance is only 96 km. The vineyards cover 8,798 hectares of vines, which stretch along the Moselle from its headwaters in the Vosges mountains on the border with Luxembourg to its confluence with the Rhine near Koblenz, as well as along its two tributaries, the Saar and the Ruwer. These three rivers gave the old name Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, which was valid until 2007. The oldest vineyards in Germany are located on the upper...

Germany, or rather the area that belongs to it today, has a wine culture that is over two thousand years old. But imported wine was already being drunk before that, as evidenced by a Greek wine bottle made of clay dating from around 400 BC found in a Celtic tomb. The oldest vineyards were located on the banks of the Rhine, Neckar and Moselle. These rivers with their elongated valleys, as well as their tributaries, are still the classic growing areas today. Viticulture was established by the colonization of the Greeks in Gaul and then brought to perfection by the Roman culture. The conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) brought Roman viticulture from...
