The winery is located in the community of Oestrich-Winkel in the German Rheingau wine region. The history of the traditional family goes back to the 13th century. The foundation stone for today's business was laid in 1773 by Philipp Anton Allendorf. In 1955 the vineyards covered just 1.5 hectares. Today, with about 70 hectares, it is the largest family-run winery in the Rheingau. Since 2015, the restaurant "Brentanohaus", built in 1751 in the centre of Winkel, has been in operation, where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) were already guests.
The winery is managed by Ulrich Allendorf and his sister Christine Schönleber. Josef Schönleber (the owner's brother-in-law) is responsible for the management and Max Schönleber is the cellar master. The vineyards are located in the individual sites Hinterkirch and Höllenberg(Assmannshausen), Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland (Rüdesheim), as well as Dachsberg, Hasensprung and Jesuit Garden (Winkel). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling,Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer, as well as with the red wine varieties PinotNoir and PinotMeunier.
The wines are marketed according to the VDP classification in the quality lines Schatzkammerweine (selected site wines of special quality, Goldkapsel), Lagenweine (maximum of three top sites from each district, Riesling or Spätburgunder), Ortsweine (only one district, Riesling or Spätburgunder) and Gutsweine (all varieties, all sites). The Grosse Gewächse are Rieslings from the VDP-classified Grosse Lagen. The flagship of the house is the red wine "Quercus Superior Pinot Noir" which is matured in 100%$ new barriques. In years with suitable weather conditions, Trockenbeerenauslese and ice wines are also pressed. We also offer bottle-fermented sparkling wine, noble brandies (wine, marc, wild raspberry, pear) and grape juice.
A special feature is the "Wein.Erlebnis.Welt" (Wine.Experience.World), with which visitors to the winery can get to know the variety and range of aromas and flavours of the various wines during special wine tastings. Another special feature is that vines and their yields can be leased for five or ten years. The winery has been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wineries) and Charta Rheingau since 1999.
