The vineyard "Friedrich Bastian - Erbhof Zum Grünen Baum" is located in the municipality of Bacharach in the German wine growing region of the Middle Rhine. The origin of the traditional business goes back to the year 1697. Since 1993 it has been managed by Friedrich Bastian, who had been responsible for the wine since 1989. Attached is the estate bar "Zum Grünen Baum". The vineyards comprise six hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Insel Heylesen Werth, Posten, St. Jost and Wolfshöhle. Mainly Riesling (4.5 hectares), as well as Scheurebe, Pinot Noir and Portugieser are cultivated. The Rhine island of Heylesen Werth represents an absolute speciality in connection with viticulture. It is named after a former owner named Hans Heyles. His heirs sold the island in 1797 in an auction, at which it came into the possession of the ancestors of the present owners

The small island is only 150 metres wide, 680 metres long and completely flat. Tractors, tools and personnel for the cultivation have to be transported by motor ferry. This makes winegrowing here a real challenge. The level of the areas planted with vines is about 6.5 metres above the average water level of the Rhine. On medium-heavy, sandy loess loam and muddy soil, only Riesling is cultivated here. Fermentation is temperature-controlled in stainless steel tanks, with about half of the wines fermented spontaneously. The wines are aged in large wooden barrels in the traditional way. The winery is a VDP member.
