The traditional winery is located in the heart of the Kaiserstuhl in the municipality of Oberrotweil in the German wine-growing region of Baden. The origins of the traditional winery date back to 1634, when the Gleichenstein noble family acquired the buildings and lands of the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien in what was then Rothwyl, along with the tithe rights. After the early death of his father, Baron Hans Joachim von Gleichenstein transformed the mixed farm into a winery in 1959. In 2003, the winery was completely handed over to his son Johannes von Gleichenstein and his wife Chrissi, already the eleventh generation of the family. They are supported by field manager Franz Galli, cellar master Johannes Köster and sales manager & sommelier Sebastian Wilkens, as well as 11 other members of the team.
The vineyards cover 45 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyards Eichberg and Henkenberg with the vineyard "Galgenbuck" (Oberrotweil), Winklerberg (Ihringen) and Schlossberg (Achkarren). They are mainly planted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, as well as Chardonnay. Particular importance is attached to processing the grapes as gently as possible.
The house's premium wines include the "BARON PHILIPP" and "BARON LOUIS" wines, as well as the wines from the above-mentioned vineyards. Since September 2023, the new line of reserve wines (from the three main varieties) has been introduced. The estate wines form the basic segment. The sparkling wine range, which has so far included the Badische Winzersekt "Pinot & Chardonnay" and the Frizzante "Phi & Lou", will be rounded off with a "Crémant Rosé". As specialities, the port-like dessert red wine "P" (Pinot Noir, LBV matured in barrels for 10 years), as well as the Vermouth "apros" (red, rosé, white) are produced. Around 300,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the association die Güter.
