currently 159,010 Wines and 24,646 Producers, including 2,773 classified producers.
The winery is located in the municipality of Birkweiler (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It was founded after the First World War by Karl Wehrheim, who introduced bottling very early on. His son Dr Heinz Wehrheim continued to expand the business. After completing a degree in agricultural science and a practical year in the USA, the estate has been run by Karl-Heinz Wehrheim since 1992 and now together with son Franz Wehrheim. The vineyards, one third of which are steep slopes, cover a total of 20 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Kastanienbusch, Mandelberg and Rosenberg, as well as the cadastral site Am Dachsberg (all in Birkweiler). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (with one third of the vineyard area), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer and Muskateller, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Certified biodynamic viticulture is practised according to the rules of the respekt-BIODYN association.
The product range is structured according to the VDP classification model. The wines from the two vineyards Kastanienbusch and Mandelberg are marketed as Grosses Gewächs. Depending on the type of wine, they are matured in stainless steel tanks, in large wooden bar rels or in barriques, with great emphasis on terroir and varietal typicity. Every year, 110,000 bottles of wine are produced and exported to many European countries as well as to China, Japan and Taiwan. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies (marc, fruit, wine) are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), Sektgüter Rheinpfalz (VSR) and Fünf Freunde aus der Südpfalz associations.
