The winery is located in the municipality of Odernheim in the German wine-growing region of Nahe. It is located at the foot of the Disibodenberg, on which the picturesque ruins of the former Disibodenberg monastery stand. Its origins date back to the 7th century, when the Irish monk Disibod stuck his walking stick into the ground and, according to legend, it began to sprout as a vine. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) lived here between 1106 and 1147 and wrote her most important work "Scivias" here. The Benedictines and later Cistercians brought viticulture to flourish around the Disibodenberg. In the Middle Ages, the monastery mill belonged to the monastery as a farm. After secularisation during the Reformation, the mill and vineyards were initially taken over by the sovereigns, the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. From the 18th century onwards, the mill and vineyards were run by the Schmidt family for eight generations.
The Klostermühle Odernheim wine estate then passed into new ownership in 1992. Significant investments were made in the winery and outdoor operations, and the vineyards were considerably expanded. In addition, sparkling wine production was established, the Boos von Waldeckscher Hof distillery was founded and the Meisenheimer Hof wine hotel was opened in 2013. Since 1 April 2019, the business has been operating under the new name Weingut Disibodenberg. It is managed in the form of a limited partnership by the managing partners Christian Held and Thomas Zenz (Dipl.-Ing. Viticulture).
Areas of the Racknitz vineyard were taken over in 2017. The vineyards now cover 22 hectares of vines in the Odernheim district. These are Kloster Disibodenberg, Kapellenberg as well as Montfort and Langenberg (the latter two in sole ownership). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris,Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Silvaner, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder and Dunkelfelder. Great importance is attached to natural cultivation, care of the old vineyards and low yields of approx. 50 hl/ha.
The white wines are matured in small stainless steel barrels (600, 1,200 and 2,400 litres) in order to preserve the pure, fruity notes. All red wines and some white wine specialities are matured in wood. In addition to the traditional barrels (1,200 litres), barrique barrels are also used. The sparkling wines are produced using the classic bottle fermentation method from our own grapes. The brandies (fruit, marc) are produced in the company's own distillery, which is designed according to the latest standards in order to bring out the unadulterated flavours of fully ripe fruit (Boos von Waldecksche Hofbrennerei). The annual production is around 110,000 bottles of wine, 30,000 bottles of sparkling wine and 3,000 bottles of brandy.
