The winery is located in the municipality of Kaltern (Caldaro) in the Italian wine-growing area of South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige region). In 1851, the castle near Bolzano was purchased by Archduke Rainer of Austria (1827-1913), Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia, and became the property of the Counts of Kuenburg by succession. Today the estate is managed by Georg Count of Kuenburg, now in its sixth generation. The vineyards comprise 31 hectares of vines in the best locations around Lake Caldaro, some of which are up to 50 years old. The white wine varieties Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Moscato Giallo as well as the red wine varieties Lagrein, Rosenmuskateller (Moscato Rosa), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Vernatsch and Merlot are cultivated. A special feature is the Rosenmuskateller, which is particularly well-tended here, as Prince Heinrich von Campofranco brought some vines from his Sicilian possessions. As a family heritage, it is guarded like a treasure and only produced in limited quantities. It is consistently cultivated in a natural, environmentally friendly manner and only grapes from our own vineyards are used to make the wines. Vinification takes place three floors below ground in the historic cellar in large oak barrels or in barriques, depending on the type of wine. Among other things, wines from the DOC areas of South Tyrol and Lake Caldaro are produced.
