The winery is located in the municipality of Schweigen (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of
Pfalz on the border with Alsace. The first foundation stone was already laid around 1900 with the purchase of vineyards in Wissembourg. That is why two thirds of the vineyards are on Alsatian soil. In addition to earlier cattle and arable farming, viticulture has existed in the family for over 100 years, but it was not until 1971 that the marketing of bottled wine began. The farm is run by Gerd Bernhart. The vineyards cover 17 hectares of vines in the single vineyard
Sonnenberg (Schweigen) with Raedling at its core, which is located on French territory in
Alsace
The white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Auxerrois and Sauvignon Blanc are cultivated, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Blauer Portugieser, St. Laurent, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are cultivated according to the
organic viticulture guidelines certified in 2016. The grapes are harvested as late as possible and then gently processed. The white wines are fermented in cool steel tanks. The red wines mature in wooden
barrels for up to 24 months after
maceration. The wines are marketed according to the
VDP classification model. Fine brandies (yeast, marc) and bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a
member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates)
