Editor note: Light nutty oak on the nose, spicy and earthy notes, red and a few black berries, peppery traces, mushrooms, hint of soup greens, cassis and iodine. Ripe, juicy fruit on the palate, nutty oak, some cocoa and a hint of coffee and tobacco, light acid bite, fine, sandy, ripe tannins, light peppery spice, hint of resin, good persistence and substance, tart, salty mineral notes, hint of citrus zests, slightly ethereal spicy notes on a very good, tart, juicy finish. Opens up significantly with aeration.

The production area is located in the federal state of Hessen in Germany. The vineyards cover 3,211 hectares of vine area starting at the lower Main river east of Wiesbaden and extending about 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhine to Lorch north of Rüdesheim. The "Rheingau Riesling Route" wine route runs along the right bank of the Rhine from Lorch to Hochheim. Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) allegedly had the first vineyard planted near today's Johannisberg Castle.
