The vineyard of the "Winzerfamilie Flick" is located in the municipality of Bechtolsheim ( Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. Viticulture has been practised in this traditional family since the year 1600. Today, the business is run by Ulrich Flick and Alexander Flick, assisted by viticultural technician Katharina Flick. During his studies in Geisenheim, Alexander Flick also gained practical experience at several wineries in the Rheingau, as well as in New Zealand. The vineyards comprise 21 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Homberg, Klosterberg, Sonnenberg, Wingertstor (Bechtolsheim), Herrgottspfad (Gau-Odernheim), Höllenbrand (Gundersheim) and Morstein (Westhofen), as well as areas in Siefersheim.
They are 60% planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Huxelrebe, and 40% with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Blauer Portugieser, Dornfelder, Cabernet Cubin, Regent and St. Laurent. The vineyards are generally cultivated by hand with the aim of achieving the best possible grape quality. This includes careful leaf and vine work, defoliation of the grape zone, gentle soil work, thinning and selective harvesting.
The house's motto in winemaking is to "whet the appetite for Rheinhessen" with wines that are typical of the region. Depending on the type of wine, these are vinified in a reductive manner with the aim of emphasising fruit, with a long maceration period and, if necessary, overpumping, spontaneous fermentation and long ageing on the fine le es in steel tanks or barrique barrels. They are marketed in three quality levels: estate wines (typical wines from the vineyards around the Petersberg), local wines (origin-oriented according to the villages) and site wines (long maturation period, old vines, only in the best years). All local and site wines are fermented spontaneously with reduced yields of less than 50 hl/ha after selective manual harvesting and are left on the yeast for a long time. The top red wines mature for at least 12 months in barriques. Premium wines are the white wines Alexander (Chardonnay) and Jakob (Riesling) and the red wine Bechtolsheimer (Pinot Noir) matured for 16 months in barrique. Around 150,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of Selection Rheinhessen and Generation Riesling.
