Next to Bergland (Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) and Steirerland (Styria) the third Austrian wine growing region. With around 90%, it is by far the largest of the three. It includes the vineyards of the wine-growing regions of Burgenland, Lower Austria and Vienna (was a separate wine-growing region until 2009). The designation applies to local wines. In Austria, viticulture has been practised since the time of settlement by the Celts almost 3,000 years ago. The Burgenland municipality of Zagersdorf and the Lower Austrian municipality of Stillfried in the Weinviertel are considered the oldest wine-growing communities in Austria. In both places, grape seeds were found that date back to 700 and 900 BC respectively and can clearly be assigned to the species Vitis vinifera. The exact origin of the white grape variety is uncertain; it could come from Germany, France or the Czech Republic (Moravia). The different varieties differ in berry colour, aroma, leaf shape and cluster size, as well as in vigour, yield and susceptibility to disease, but they have almost the same DNA profile with minor differences. They are therefore considered as a single grape variety, although they are very much listed separately as distinct varieties in many grape variety catalogues.
