The winery is located in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedès in the Spanish DO area of Penedès
(Catalonia region). It was founded in 1865 by Francisco José Doménech and is named after an old church called "Santa Maria de Vallformosa". The name means "beautiful valley". The Spanish King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941) visited the estate in 1904 and in 2000 the company was certified ISO 9001. The vineyards cover 397 hectares of vines with El Maset, Mas Baltá, Mas Caballé, Masía Can Colomer, Mas Granell, Masía Freyé, Mas La Roca, Masía La Sala and Vallfort. They are planted with the white varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, Muscat, Parellada and Xarel-lo, and the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Monastrell, Samsó (Carignan), Syrah and Tempranillo. The wines are produced in the Selection, Noble, Traditional, MVSA and Gran Barón lines. There are 2,500 barriques available for ageing. Cava
(sparkling wine) is also produced on a large scale in the five lines. The Brut is one of the highest awarded Cavas in Spain. Wines from the DO areas Catalunya
(Primum Vitae Crianza and Reserva) are also produced.
