SALINA IGT VIGNA DI PAOLA 2019
Mondial des Vins Extrêmes |
The winery is located in the municipality of Sclafani Bagni in the province of Palermo on the island of Sicily. It was founded in 1830. At that time, the two brothers Don Lucio and Don Carmelo Mastrogiovanni Tasca acquired the former Regaleali fiefdom with around 1,200 hectares of land. The estate was managed by Lucio Baron Tasca, one of Sicily's agricultural pioneers. Under the leadership of his grandson Count Tasca of Almerita (+1892), Regaleali wine became famous far beyond the borders. His son Lucio Count Tasca Bordonaro expanded the estate and tripled the area under vines. As a result of an agricultural reform, the estate was eventually reduced to 500 hectares. From 1957, Count Giuseppe Tasca took over responsibility and devoted himself primarily to viticulture with numerous innovations. After the death of Conte Lucio Tasca in 2022, the business is now run by his sons Alberto and Giuseppe.
The vineyards cover 500 hectares of vines. The oldest vineyard, called "San Lucio", was created in 1959. The white wine varieties Catarratto Bianco, Chardonnay, Inzolia, Grecanico (Garganega), Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Bianco (Pinot Blanc), as well as the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nerello Mascalese, Nero d'Avola, Perricone, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) and Syrah are cultivated. A further forty Italian, Greek, Spanish and French varieties are also cultivated on a trial basis. The vineyards are protected from the hot Scirocco desert winds by three artificial lakes.
In 1999, an ultra-modern wine cellar was put into operation. There are antique wall basins made of resin-coated cement, stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels from Slavonia, Allier and Tronçais. The barrique barrels have a volume of 350 litres (compared to the usual 225). The winery is best known for its IGT brand wine"Regaleali" (Royal). The "Regaleali Bianco" is blended from the Inzolia, Catarratto and Sauvignon varieties. The Rosso and Rosato varieties are produced from Perricone and Nero d'Avola. Nozze d'Oro" (Inzolia and Sauvignon Blanc) and "Rosso del Conte" (predominantly Nero d'Avola) are considered top products. Around 2.3 million bottles of wine are produced every year. Around 40% is exported, mainly to Germany and the USA.
