The family winery "reyter des Christoph Unterhofer" is located in Bolzano (Bozen) in the Italian wine-growing region of South Tyrol ( Trentino-South Tyrol region). It was founded in 1988 by Josef Unterhofer; in addition to viticulture, fruit growing is also practised. In 1996 it was taken over by Christoph Unterhofer. The vineyard area was subsequently expanded and a new, dedicated winery was built in 2019. The vineyards cover 3.5 hectares and are planted with the red wine varieties Lagrein and Vernatsch (Schiava Gentile), as well as the white wine varieties Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Souvignier Gris, Bronner and Muscaris. Some of the vineyards are very old Vernatsch clones, over a hundred years old, which are propagated in the vine training Pergola for conservation purposes. Organic farming is carried out according to the certified rules of the organic association Bioland. Quality criteria in the vineyard are gentle pruning, yield reduction and foliage care. The manual grape harvest is carried out in several passes to ensure physiologically ripe and healthy grapes.
The product range includes various IGT wines Mitterberg and Vigneti delle Dolomiti. Cellar work is carried out according to non-invasive principles with as few interventions as possible (as much as necessary, as little as possible). All the wines (except "Lakrez") are fermented spontaneously and then aged for at least two years in traditional large wooden barrels. They are bottled without filtration and fining with low sulphurisation, where they are left to mature before being marketed. The premium wines are "Rahm Lagrein Riserva"(varietal, 2 years in wooden barrels), "Lakrez Lagrein Rosè" (varietal, short maceration, ageing in stainless steel), "Schiava Vernatsch" (varietal, 2 years in wooden barrels) and "Pierrot"(cuvée of different white wine varieties, also PIWI, partly mash-fermented, 2 years in large wooden barrels). The winery is a member of the Vinnatur, FIVI (Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti), Slow Food and Konsortium Südtirol Wein associations.
