DOC area in the north-east of Portugal on the border with Spain. The name Trás-os-Montes means "Behind the mountains", as it is enclosed by high mountains in the west, which separate it from the rest of Portugal. It is the result of a division of the former country wine area of the same name (Vinho Regional), by merging the three former IPR areas of Chaves (west), Planalto-Mirandês (east) and Valpaços (centre). Synonyms are Azal Espanhol, Bical, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Mortagua Preto, Touriga, Touriga Fina, Tourigo, Tourigo Antiguo, Tourigo do Dão(Portugal); Touriga National(Romania); Carabuñera(Spain). It must not be confused with the other Touriga varieties or Tinta da Barca, despite the fact that synonyms and morphological similarities seem to indicate this. It is not a mutation of the white variety Sercial (Esgana Cão). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2011, it is a presumably natural cross...
