Pago de Los Capellanes, S.A.

The winery "Pago de los Capellanes S.A." is located near the municipality of Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the DO Ribera del Duero in the northern Spanish region of Castilla y León. The property was given its name centuries ago when it was still owned by the Roman Catholic Church and was frequently visited by the chaplains of the Pedrosa parish. Since 1980 the finca has been owned by the Rodero Villa family. The vineyards at 800 metres above sea level cover about 100 hectares and are mainly planted with the varieties Tinto Fino (variety of Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The yield is limited to a maximum of 5,000 kg/ha, which is far below the official DO specifications. The Bordeaux-style wines produced are rather untypical for the region

The flagship of the house is the "Picón Capellanes", 100% pure Tinto Fino wine from a two-hectare plot. Malolactic fermentation takes place in large French oak barrels. The wine then matures for another 26 months in 100% new French barriques. Other premium wines are "Tinto Reserva" (18 months) and "Crianza" (12 months) blended from 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A joven (young wine) intended for quick enjoyment is blended from 80% Tinto Fino 80%, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot and aged for five months in barriques. The "Tinto Reserva 2003" was the overall winner of the 2006 Tempranillos al Mundo competition in Cologne and was awarded the highest "Gran Oro" prize.
