Editor note: Black berries and dark cherries on the nose, dried flowers, light herbaceous notes, some spicy anise, sweetish roasted oak. Cool and slightly rustic style, dark fruit on the palate, some malted notes and light roasted oak, vegetal notes, some astringent tannins, noticeable alcohol, not particularly deep, slightly rustic again on the finish.

The federal state of Burgenland with its capital Eisenstadt is located in the very east of Austria. It borders Slovakia to the north, Hungary to the east, Slovenia for a few kilometres to the south and the two Austrian provinces of Lower Austria and Styria to the west. Viticulture has been of great importance here for two and a half millennia, which is underlined by the saying "Extra Pannoniam non es vita; si est vita, non est ita" (Outside Pannonia , one cannot live; if one can live, then not like here), originating from the historian Johannes Aventinus (1477-1534). In Austria, viticulture has been practised since the time of settlement by the Celts almost 3,000 years ago. In both places, grape seeds were found that date back to 700 and 900 BC respectively and can clearly be assigned to the species Vitis vinifera. The lifting of the ban on planting vines outside Italy by Emperor Domitian (51-96) by Emperor Probus (232-282) had a positive...

The cross was made in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt (1888-1964) at the Klosterneuburger Weinbauinstitut (Lower Austria), who gave it the name Rotburger. It was not until 1975, in the course of the...

This red grape variety comes from France. The name is probably derived from the French word for blackbird (merle), because these birds like to nibble the berries, which are very sweet when fully ripe. However, the name may also be an allusion to the black-blue colouring of the berries similar to the bird. There are over 60 synonyms, which testify to its worldwide distribution. The most important are Alicante Noir, Begney, Bigney, Bigney Rouge, Bini, Black Alicante, Blue Merlot, Bordò, Cabernet del Cleto, Crabutet, Crabutet Noir, Crabutet Noir Merlau, Hebigney, Higney, Médoc Noir, Merlau, Merlot Black, Merlot Blue, Merlot Crni, Merlot...
