The winery is located in the eponymous municipality of Fonterutoli, south of Castellina in the Chianti-Classico
region of Tuscany
. According to legend, the municipality of Fonterutoli played an important role in the development of the Chianti
area. The estate has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1453. Lapo Mazzei was for many years president of the "Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico" (see under Gallo nero
). Today it is run by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei. The vineyards cover about 70 hectares. They have specialized in a few types of wine. The main wines are "Chianti Classico Fonterutoli" and the "Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Fonterutoli", first produced in 1995, and the IGT red wine "Siepi", aged in barriques. This wine comes from the top vineyard of the same name and is a cuvée of Sangiovese and Merlot. In Montebottigli-Grosseto in the Tuscan Maremma
region, the Tenuta Belguardo winery was established by the family.
