The area named after the river of the same name, with around 20,000 hectares of vineyards, was classified as DOC in 1990 and is located in the middle of the Beiras region in the north of Portugal. The viticulture goes back to ancient Greece. Especially where vineyards have existed for centuries, one finds numerous strange hollows and depressions in the rocks in the form of stone basins (Lagaretas). Probably grapes were pressed in these installations. This typical Portuguese method of crushing the grapes in the Lagares (stone troughs) is still practised today

The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Azal Espanhol, Bical, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Mortagua Preto, Touriga, Touriga Fina, Tourigo, Tourigo Antiguo, Tourigo do Dão(Portugal); Touriga National(Romania); Carabuñera(Spain). It must not be confused with the variety Amaral (Azal Tinto) or the other Touriga varieties, despite the fact that synonyms and morphological similarities appear to indicate this. There is no connection with the white variety Bical. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2011 and 2013, it is a parent variety of Touriga Fêmea and Touriga...

The red grape variety comes from Portugal or France. Synonyms are Alfrocheiro Preto, Alfurcheiro, Bastardo, Bastardo Negro, Tinta Bastardinha, Tinta Fina, Tinta Francesa de Viseu(Portugal); Albarín Negro, Albarín Tinto, Baboso Negro, Bruñal, Caíño Gordo(Spain). It is probably a very old variety, although it was first mentioned relatively late, in 1971. According to one hypothesis, it was imported from France, which could be indicated by the synonym Tinta Francesa de Viseu. The parentage or parenthood is unknown. It is not a colour mutation of the two white varieties Albarín Blanco or Alfrocheiro...
