DOC area for red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region of Umbria. The name derives from "Torre di Giano" (Tower of Janus - Janus is the two-faced ancient Roman deity). The foundation stone for the DOC classification was laid in the 1970s by the wine legend Giorgio Lungarotti (+1999). The zone includes parts of the eponymous municipality of Torgiano in the province of Perugia. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, the bottle label may state Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard.

The Bianco is made from Trebbiano Toscano (50-70%), as well as other authorised varieties (max. 30%). The wine types Rosso and...

Already the Roman universal scholar Pliny the Elder (23-79) spoke of a "Vinum trebulanum" from a place called Trebulanis in Campania. In 2001 the results of a study were published. According to DNA analyses, there are hardly any family relations between the many Trebbiano varieties. It would therefore be wrong to speak of one grape variety family (the same phenomenon also applies to the four groups of names Lambrusco, Malvasia, Muscatel and...

The parts of the name Greco and Grechetto, which are very common in Italy in grape variety names (main names and synonyms) do not necessarily have to be Greek, but may indicate Greek origin. In any case, the often very similar names lead to great confusion. As the DOC regulations often only mention Grechetto, it is not clear which variety(ies) are actually involved:

The white grape variety originates from the Mediterranean region, possibly Italy. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Garbesso, Garbessu, Malvasie, Malvoisie du Douro, Rolle, Rollé, Verlentin, Varlentin(France); Carica l'Asino, Favorita, Favorita Bianca, Favorita Bianca di Conegliano, Favorita d'Alba, Favoritia di Alba, Favorita di Conegliano, Formentino, Pigato, Sapaiola, Vermentini, Vermentino Bianco, Vermentino di Gallura, Vermentino Pigato(Italy); Malvasia, Malvasia à Bonifacio, Malvasia Bonifacio, Malvasia de Corse, Malvasia Grossa, Malvoisie à Gros Grains, Malvoisie Corse, Malvoisie de Corse, Verlantin, Varlantin, VermentinuKorsika...
