The Portuguese wine-growing region is named after the approximately 900 km long river, on whose very steep slopes with extreme inclination the vineyards are located. The river rises in the Spanish province of Soria (Castile-León), flows through northern Spain as the "Duero" and then through northern Portugal as the "Douro", until it finally flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Porto into the Atlantic Ocean. For more than 100 kilometres, the river forms the Portuguese-Spanish border; after that, the port wine region extends just as long in Portugal. In ancient times, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans brought vines to the Iberian peninsula. Under the long Moorish rule from the 8th to the 12th century, viticulture stagnated but did not come to a complete standstill despite the ban on alcohol. The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Since 2002, due to a lawsuit by the French wine lobby and a court decision, the former name Touriga Francesca may no longer be used. Synonyms are Albino de Souza, Esgana Cão Tinto, Tinta Barca, Touriga Frances, Touriga Francesa and Tourigo Francês. It should not be confused with the other Touriga varieties or Tinta da Barca, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms and morphological similarities. It is not a mutation of the white variety Sercial (Esgana Cão). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2011, it is a presumably natural cross...

The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Azal Espanhol, Bical, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Mortagua Preto, Touriga, Touriga Fina, Tourigo, Tourigo Antiguo, Tourigo do Dão (Portugal); Touriga National (Romania); Carabuñera (Spain). It must not be confused with the variety Amaral (Azal Tinto) or the other Touriga varieties, despite the fact that synonyms and morphological similarities appear to indicate this. There is no connection with the white variety Bical. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2011 and 2013, it is a parent variety of Touriga Fêmea and Touriga...

Synonym (also Roriz) for the grape variety Tempranillo; see there.
