The region (ital. Campania) with the capital Naples is located in the southwest of Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast near the "boot instep". More to the south are only the regions of Puglia to the east, as well as Calabria and Sicily. It is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Italy, the cultivation of wine here goes back to the Etruscans. Greek colonists probably founded colonies here and in neighbouring Calabria as early as 1,000 BC and called the area Oinotria (land of vines raised on stakes). The white grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Apiana, Apiano, Fiana, Fiano di Avellino, Fiore Mendillo, Foiano, Latina Bianca, Latina Bianca di Barletta, Latino, Latino Bianco and Santa Sofia. It must not be confused with the Minutolo variety (Fiano Aromatico, Fiore Mendillo) or with Santa Sofia, which has long been considered identical, despite the fact that synonyms or morphological similarities seem to indicate this.
