The DO area, named after the city of Rueda (Rad), is located northwest of Madrid in the heart of the Spanish region of Castilla y León. It was classified in 1980 as DO for then only white wines. Characteristic are the hot, dry summers and the cold long winters. The vineyards cover about 7,500 hectares of vines. The limestone soil consists mainly of loamy alluvial soil mixed with gravel terraces. For religious reasons the Muslims cleared large parts of the vineyards or only allowed the production of raisins. They brought with them the art of distillation, but this was not used for alcoholic drinks, but essential oils, as...

Synonyms are Albillo de Nava, Boto de Gall, Botón de Gallo Blanco, Cepa de Madrigal, Verdeja and Verdejo Blanco. It must not be confused with the Planta Fina(Damaschino), Godello (siblings), Verdejo de Salamanca, Verdejo Serrano, Verdelho or Verdello varieties, despite the fact that the synonyms or morphological similarities appear to indicate this. The variety is not a colour mutation of Trousseau...
