The "Weingut & Hofbrennerei Hiestand" is located in the municipality of Guntersblum (Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of
Rheinhessen. In the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, the family, which came from Switzerland, came to Rheinhessen, where they have now been growing grapes for several generations. Today, the family business is owned by Erich and Berthilde Hiestand, and their son Gunther Hiestand is responsible for the cellar. The vineyards cover eleven hectares of vines in the single vineyards
Bornpfad, Eiserne Hand, Kreuzkapelle and Steinberg (Guntersblum), as well as Schloss Hammerstein (Albig). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Scheurebe and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as with the red wine varieties Portugieser, Dornfelder and Schwarzriesling
The wines are
fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts. The large product range includes the five classes Zechweine, Gutsweine, Lagenweine, Prädikatsweine (up to Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein) and JJ-Line. The latter is a tribute to Julius-Jakob Hiestand, who sold his best wines at the natural wine auctions in
Mainz with great success as early as the 1920s. The JJ wines have been produced by Gunther Hiestand since the 1999 vintage. They reflect a time-honoured wine philosophy as in the days of Jukius-Jakob Hiestand. With as little technical effort as possible and based on traditional methods, these wines are vinified from the best sites and grapes with optimal ripeness. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, noble brandies from various fruits of the region (grape, yeast, elderberry, vineyard peach, wild plum, quince), as well as liqueurs are also produced
