The approximately 90 square kilometre Greek archipelago (also known as Sandorini or Santorini) is the southernmost of the Cyclades group and is located in the Aegean Sea about 100 kilometres north of Crete. The crescent-shaped main island is called Thira and forms a cauldron with the two small islands Aspronisi (0.14 km²) and Thirasia (9 km²) opposite. The white grape variety comes from Greece, from the island of Santorini. Synonyms are Assirtico, Assyrtico, Asurtico, Asyrtico and Asyrtiko. It is believed that the variety was used (among many others) to produce the famous Malvasia wines, which were shipped or exported from the Greek port of Monemvasia as early as the 13th century. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2011, there is a parent-offspring relationship with the two varieties Gaidouria and Platani.
