Largest wine-growing area in Hungary in the Pannonian Plain (Alföld) in the south of the country with about half of the Hungarian vineyard area. Until 1997 it was called Kiskunság. The vineyards cover 28,000 hectares on mainly sandy soils. After the catastrophic phylloxera catastrophe, vines were planted here in the 19th century because the pest could not tolerate the sand.
