The wine-growing region is located in the north-east of Hungary near the border with Slovakia. Northeast of it lies Tokaj-Hegyalja, the territory of Tokaj. It has a 1,000-year-old history of viticulture. There was a short interruption due to the almost 100-year-old Turkish occupation from 1596. Eger is named after the town of the same name (Eger) at the foot of the Bükk mountains. Under the town there are extensive cellar complexes.
