French name for the Burgundy region, but also a regional appellation covering the entire region. It applies to all areas that are either outside the higher appellations or to wines that do not comply with their production rules. This group is the lowest level of the four-level Burgundy classification, to which all Burgundy wines are basically entitled. Certain additions limit the regional origin to smaller areas/locations or wine types.
