The region with the capital Florence is located in the centre of Italy on the Ligurian coast; the third largest Italian island Elba is also included. It borders Liguria and Emilia-Romagna to the north, Marche and Umbria to the east and Lazio to the south. Besides Piedmont, Tuscany is probably the most famous Italian wine-growing region and also one of the most beautiful areas of the country in terms of landscape. Long before the Romans, the Etruscans cultivated wine here, making it one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Europe. In ancient times, the area formed the land of...

Italy is one of the oldest wine-growing countries, the beginnings go back at least to before 1,000 BC. It was at this time that the Etruscans appeared in central Italy, settling areas in the four regions of today's Abruzzo, Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria. The origins of Italian wine culture lie above all in the Greek colonisation, which brought Greek wine culture to the peninsula, beginning in the 10th century BC on the island of Sicily as well as Campania and Calabria. The Greeks brought many of their grape varieties with them and named the ideal land for...

The red grape variety comes from Italy. There are more than 80 synonyms that testify to its probably great age and wide distribution, especially in Italy. Among the most important are Brunelletto, Brunello, Cacchiano, Calabrese, Cardisco, Cassano, Cordisio, Chiantino, Corinto Negro, Guarnacciola, Ingannacane, Lambrusco Mendoza, Lacrima, Liliano, Maglioppa, Montepulciano Primaticcio, Morellino, Morellino di Scansano, Negrello, Nelutcho, Nerello, Nerello Campotu, Nerino, Nerino Sanvicetro, Niella, Nielluccio, Primaticcio, Prugnolo Dolce, Prugnolo Gentile, Puttanella, Sangiogheto, Sangiovese dal Cannello Lungo, Sangiovese dal Cannello Lungo di Predappio,...

Synonym (also Colore) for the grape varieties Abrusco and Colorino del Valdarno; see there.

Often used but not unique short name for the two red grape varieties Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although they are closely related (the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon are Cabernet Franc x Sauvignon Blanc), it is not always clear which one is meant. Especially in Northern Italy, it is not clear for some DOC wines which variety or composition is included. As a rule, Cabernet Sauvignon is more likely to be meant, especially because it is simply more common. But Cabernet is confusingly also a synonym for the grape varieties Béquignol Noir and Carmenère.
