The Spanish sherry house "Emilio Lustau" is located in the city of Jerez. It was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo y Veyan under the name "Finca Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza". The sherries were resold to large bodegas. In 1940, his son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega moved into buildings that were once part of the Moorish fortifications of Jerez and began to export his own sherries. Under his successor Rafael Balao the bodega became one of the most innovative, reviving classics such as the "East India Solera". The vineyards in the two DO areas of Jerez and Manzanilla cover 170 hectares. Tomás Abad is a subsidiary company. The company has been majority owned by Luís Caballero since 1990, but works independently. Lustau introduced the custom of buying sherry by the barrel from other smaller sherry producers, storing it in stock and then bottling it (uncut) in its original form. Such products are called Almacenista. Well-known Lustau brands are the amontillado "Escuadrilla" and the olorosos "Don Nuno" and "Emperatriz Eugenia".
