The winery is located in the municipality of Hochheim in the German Rheingau
wine region. Its origins date back to 1780, when the father of Mainz Cathedral Dean Dr. Franz Werner acquired the estate from Count York. According to the credit chronicle, the first wine auction took place in 1795. Even today the estate regularly participates in auctions
and at the Mainz Wine Exchange. Today, the estate is managed by Dr. Franz Werner Michel, who is already the seventh generation of the family. The vineyards comprise 13 hectares of vineyards in the Hochheim sites Domdechaney
, Stein, Stielweg and Reichestal
, all of which are classified as first growths
in accordance with the Rheingau Quality Mark Ordinance. They are 98% planted with Riesling, the small remainder with the red wine varieties Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder. The extract-rich and long-lasting Riesling wines mature in individual maturation depending on the type of wine. The wines are mainly sold to the gastronomy and specialized trade, two thirds are exported. The winery is a member of the VDP
(Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
