AOC area in the west of the French wine region of Provence, named after the city north of Marseille. Aix-en-Provence was a stronghold of the arts in the 15th century under the "Winemaker King" René von Anjou (1409-1480) and the wine from this area was already famous then. The Count of Provence got his name from the introduction of wine at the French court. The painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) spent a large part of his life in the city and immortalized the landscape in his paintings. Southeast of the city lies the small AOC area Palette.
