The appellation is an enclave within the Coteaux du Layon area in the Loire wine region. The name is derived from the "best quarter" (Quart) around Chaume in the municipality of Rochefort-sur-Loire. In ancient times, the feudal lord kept the yields of this quarter. The vineyards cover more than 50 hectares of vineyards on steep slopes facing south on the right bank of the Layon, a tributary of the Loire.
