The communal appellation is located as an enclave at the southern end of the Mâconnais area in Burgundy. It must not be confused with the commune of the same name in Provence. The area is divided by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The vineyards cover over 700 hectares of vines in the eight communes of Chânes, Chasselas, Leynes, Davayé, Prissé, Saint-Amour (one of the Beaujolais Cru communes), Saint-Vérand and Solutré in the department of Saône-et-Loire.
