Wine Review Report:

Last reviewed: 15 May, 2017

The small dwarf republic (61 km²) is located in north-eastern central Italy between the two regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. The vineyards cover 225 hectares of vines. Most of the winegrowers deliver their grapes to the Consorzio Vini Tipici di San Marino. The wines are produced from the grape varieties Moscato Bianco (Muscat Blanc) with the largest proportion of sweet sparkling wine, Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco (Pinot Blanc).

The white grape variety originates from the border region Italy/Slovenia. Synonyms are Avola, Erbula, Gargania, Garganica, Rabola, Rabiola, Rebolla, Ribolla Bianca, Ribolla Gialla di Rosazzo, Ribolla di Rosazzo and Ribuèle (Italy); Jarbola, Jerbula, Ribola Bijela (Croatia); Garganija, Garganja, Grganc, Rebula, Rebula Bela, Teran Bijeli, Zelena Rebula (Slovenia). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it originates from a presumably natural cross between unknown parent variety x Gouais Blanc. However, this is based on only 12 DNA markers (see molecular genetics)....

The white grape variety originates from France. There are around 120 synonyms, which indicate the vine's great age and worldwide distribution. The most important ones, grouped alphabetically by country, are Clevner, Clävner (Alsace); Arboisier, Arnaison Blanc, Arnoison, Aubain, Aubaine, Auvergnat Blanc, Auvernat Blanc, Auxerrois, Auxois, Beaunois, Blanc de Champagne, Chardonnet, Chaudenay, Chaudenet, Chaudent, Epinette, Epinette Blanc, Epinette de Champagne, Gamay Blanc, Gentil Blanc, Luisant, Melon à Queue Rouge, Melon Blanc, Melon d'Arbois, Melon d'Arlay, Morillon, Morillon Blanc, Noirien Blanc, Pineau Blanc, Pineau Blanc Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc Chardonnay,...

Synonym for the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc; see there.
