The winery is located in the municipality of Gratallops in the Spanish DOCa area of Priorato (Catalonia). It was founded in 1979 by René Barbier under the name "René Barbier Fill" (Fill = son). During his studies in Bordeaux, after the death of his father, the flourishing family business "René Barbier" in Penedès went bankrupt and was taken over by Multi Freixenet. Due to the risk of confusion, Barbier changed his name to Clos Mogador (his wife's name) in 1997. He was one of the four winegrowers who founded the success of the area. His great-grandfather Leon Barbier had already bought land in the Priorato in 1870. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards planted with Garnatxa Negra(Garnacha Tinta), Carineña(Mazuelo), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. The red wine "Clos Mogador", which is traded as a cult wine, is made from mainly Garnatxa Negra blended with portions of the other varieties and matures in French barriques. The second wine is called "Clos Manyetes" from Carineña and Garnatxa Negra.
