The winery is located in the municipality of Dittelsheim-Hessloch (Wonnegau area) in the German wine-growing region of
Rheinhessen. Its origins date back to 1173, when a vineyard was founded in Hessloch by the
Cistercians of the Otterberg monastery. The monks had to leave their monastery in 1553 due to the Peasant Wars. From 1645 onwards, the estate was managed by the Michel family's ancestors and finally acquired by purchase in 1780. After studying oenology in
Geisenheim and practical experience in New Zealand and South African wineries, the winery is now run by the eighth generation of the Michel family, Ulrich Michel, and his wife Karen, who is trained as an agronomist
The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Edle Weingärten, Liebfrauenberg and Mondschein (Hessloch), as well as
Hasensprung with filet piece Löwenberg (Bechtheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Dornfelder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the type of wine, the wines are matured in steel tanks, large wooden barrels or in barriques. Special wines are also bottled in
magnum (1.5 l). In years with suitable weather conditions, an
ice wine is also produced. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, grape marc brandy, wine vinegar and
wine jelly are also produced
