The Spanish DO area is located in the political region of Valencia in the Levant and is named after two cities in the centre of the area. Extreme climatic conditions prevail. In the hot summers there are temperatures up to 40 °C, in the cold winters up to minus 15 °C. The vineyards at 600 to 1,000 meters above sea level cover about 40,000 hectares. 32,000 of these alone are occupied by the red variety Bobal, which is traditionally grown in bush form. Most of them are over 50 and even up to 100 years old. Accordingly, the yields are very low, resulting in red wines rich in tannins and extracts. Other red varieties are Tempranillo with...

The white grape variety originates from Spain (Middle East by hypothesis). Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Gredelin, Lardot, Maccabéo, Maccabeu, Ugni Blanc (France); Charas Blanc (California); Macabeu, Subirat, Subirats, Viura, Vuera (Spain). Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the varieties Alcañón, Trebbiano Toscano (Ugni Blanc) or the genetically similar Xarello. DNA analyses carried out in 2013 revealed a parentage of Hebén x Brustiano Faux (not identical to...
