Together with Montagne, Lussac and Saint-Georges, it is one of the four communes located outside the Saint-Émilion (Bordeaux) appellation just north of the Barbanne river. These four may also use their name on the label, in this case Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion. The vineyards cover some 750 hectares of vines, spread over the two communes of Puisseguin and Monbadon. The red wines are mainly blended from Merlot, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pressac (Cot) and are similar to those from Saint-Émilion. The most famous vineyards are Château Bel-Air, Château Durand-Laplaigne, Château Fongaban, Château Guibeau...

The red grape variety comes from France. The name is probably derived from the French word for blackbird (merle), because these birds like to eat the berries, which are very sweet when fully ripe. However, the name can also be an allusion to the black-blue colouring of the berries similar to that of the bird. There are more than 60 synonyms, which testify the worldwide distribution. The most important are Alicante Noir, Bigney, Black Alicante, Blue Merlot, Bordò, Crabutet, Crabutet Noir, Hebigney, Médoc Noir, Merlau, Merlot Black, Merlot Blue, Merlot Crni, Merlot Nero, Merlot Noir, Merlott, Merlou, Picard, Pikard, Plant Médoc,...

The red grape variety comes either from France (Bordeaux) or from Spain (Basque Country = País Vasco). There are about 80 synonyms that testify to its great age and worldwide distribution. The most important ones, grouped alphabetically by country are Achéria, Ardounet, Arrouya, Bidure, Boubet, Bouchet Franc, Bouchet Saint-Émilion, Bouchy, Breton, Cabernet Aunis, Cabernet Francese, Cabernet Franc Noir, Cabernet Gris, Cabrunet, Capbreton Rouge, Carmenet, Couahort, Crouchen Negre, Crouchen Noir, Gros Bouchet, Gros Cabernet, Gros Vidure, Messanges Rouge, Morenoa Veron Bouchy, Noir Major, Plant Breton, Plant de l'Abbé Breton, Sable Rouge, Trouchet, Trouchet Noir, Véron,...
